UK Bettors Favor Catchy Horse Names – And It’s Paying Off!
It turns out that picking a horse solely because of its catchy name is a strategy that seems to be working wonders for punters in the UK.
In a survey conducted among a thousand UK residents who indulge in occasional bets, it emerged that choosing horses based on their names has yielded better results than other factors like jockey names or jersey colors.
Commissioned by Free Betting, this survey through OnePoll.com highlighted that backing horses based on appealing names has led to an average win of £32.17 per bet.
This strategy outperformed others based on jersey colors (£21.15 average win), choosing based on jockey names (£24.67 on average), or just picking a horse at random (£28.82).
Half of the casual gamblers shared that they generally choose horses based on the charm of their names.
Other popular methods include selecting a horse number with personal significance or even being captivated by a good-looking jockey.
While only 22% focus on the horse’s performance history before placing bets, a larger 56% find more enjoyment in choosing a horse based on its charming name, color, or personal significance.
The findings also showed that the average participant places around 10 bets annually, typically wagering no more than £10.55 per bet.
Sharing their most memorable win through name selection, a survey participant recounted betting on Mon Mome, the 2009 Grand National victor, because the name resonated personally during a time of mourning, leading to a remarkable win.
Other responses shared anecdotes like betting on a horse named ‘Grey Lady’ inspired by a visit to a jazz club of the same name, or ‘Highland Mist’ due to the participant’s Scottish roots.
Some stories showed humor, with punters choosing horses with playful names like ‘Your tent or mine’, ‘The Bunny Boiler’, and ‘Custard the Dragon’.
Among survey responses, backing the famous Red Rum due to the name brought huge returns for several punters, highlighting the allure of intriguing names.
Participants revealed a range of reasons for placing bets on specific horse names, involving familial connections, nostalgic memories, or even exotic sounds.
People bet on names that ‘resonate’ with them, tap into their gut feelings, relate to recent events, or even remind them of childhood or holidays.
When asked, ‘What would you name your own racehorse to attract bettors?’ ideas ranged from ‘Bet On Me’, ‘Champion’, to humorous or paradoxical ones like ‘Donkey’!
According to Free Betting’s spokesperson, though many share tips on likely winners, the real joy for many punters lies in backing a horse they feel personally connected to, though this isn't always the most profitable method. Balancing enjoyment with caution is key.
